With each additional Zip format, Iomega further muddied the waters. It was simple when every Zip disk stored 100 MB and every Zip drive could read and write to it. Zip 250 drives can read and write both Zip 100 and Zip 250 disks, although they write to Zip 100 disks very slowly. Zip 100 drives automatically eject Zip 250 disks as unreadable. EDIT: Nothwistanding the above, the floppy install disk contains the Iomega Driver and Iomega Guest which are actually sufficient to use the Zip Drive. Compatibility Architecture: 68k. Mac OS 6-8.6. Mrdav: The Iomega Driver and Guest work with Mac OS 6.0.8 and Mac OS 7, whereas the Zip Tools need Mac OS 7 (adapted from the installation guide). Iomega Zip 100 Disk Iomega zip disk want to idsk maximize the life of your Apple gear. The performance of the Zip drive earns it a spot on our WinList. Zip drives are still used today by retro-computing enthusiasts as a means to transfer large amounts compared to the retro hardware iometa data between modern and older computer systems.
Windows device driver information for Iomega USB Zip 100
The Iomega USB Zip 100 has a structure similar to Iomega's earlier version of the Bernoulli Box that had writable surface in both sides of the disk mounted with read or write heads in a linear configuration. The read and write heads are in form of actuator flies that rapidly spin over the flexible medium supported on a strong cartridge. The difference between the Iomega USB Zip 100 disk and the earlier version of Bernoulli Box set up is that the former lacks a Bernoulli plate. As a result, the Iomega USB Zip 100 has a cartridge with only a single disk as opposed to the two disks used in the Bernoulli cartridge (that is one located on each side of the Bernoulli plate). Inside the Iomega USB Zip 100, read and write heads move in a mechanism similar to that used on a HDD without involving the principle employed in the Bernoulli plate.
Outdated Drivers?
Unless you update your drivers regularly you may face hardware performance issues.
To check your drivers you should manually verify every device on your system for driver updates
This section gives the steps involved in obtaining and installing drivers for the Iomega USB Zip 100 device. The user begins by identifying the port to be used by the zip disk. The identification has to be done with the support of compatible Windows operating systems such Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Identification is followed by an update of the drivers supporting devices using the relevant operating system. The next step is to locate the zip port and choose Iomega USB Zip. Thereafter, the user enters the driver file download URL shown on top of this page in order to access the download page. This file is in a zipped format and so has to be unzipped before being stored in the computer. The driver has an installation prompt to guide the user to complete installation. 800k disk image of the original Iomega Zip Disk Install Disk drivers for Zip disk drives v4.2 in a Stuffit archive. I've heard this one's kinda hard to find, hope it helps someone.
The 1st download is a Disk Copy 4.2 image of the installer floppy disk. The installer requires the Zip Tools disk to work. If anyone has a physical copy of the Zip Tools Version 4.2 disk (including all the extras), please make an image and upload it here so that we have a historically correct set (for Macintosh at least).
For those who want to actually install the Iomega Zip 4.2 software to use, a working install package can be found at The Mac Driver Museum.
Version 4.2 can be used to run a Zip drive on a MacPlus: a simple web search will give you information on how to do this.
EDIT: Nothwistanding the above, the floppy install disk contains the Iomega Driver and Iomega Guest which are actually sufficient to use the Zip Drive.
